American Legion Post #11 in Jefferson concluded its annual fifth grade flag essay contest in December. Awards were presented at Greene County Middle School by Post #11 vice commander Jim Andrew on Dec. 19.
Sixty-three students participated in the flag essay contest under the guidance of fifth grade social studies teacher Kim Braun.
First place was awarded to Annabelle Sanders. She received $30 and her essay will be forwarded to the District contest. She will be invited to read her essay at the 2023 Memorial Day observance in Jefferson.
Second place and $20 was awarded to Charlotte Sang, and third place and $10 was awarded to Sedona Stevens.
Andrew thanked Braun for her help with the contest.
“This annual program is conducted nationwide to encourage patriotism among our young students and to highlight to them the importance of our national heritage,” Andrew said.
